Pe lângă plopii fără soţ...

"Pe lângă plopii fără soţ
Adesea am trecut;
Mă cunoşteau vecinii toţi -
Tu nu m-ai cunoscut.

La geamul tău ce strălucea
Privii atât de des;
O lume toată-nţelegea -
Tu nu m-ai înţeles.

De câte ori am aşteptat
O şoaptă de răspuns!
O zi din viaţă să-mi fi dat,
O zi mi-era de-ajuns;

O oră să fi fost amici,
Să ne iubim cu dor,
S-ascult de glasul gurii mici
O oră, şi să mor.

Dându-mi din ochiul tău senin
O rază dinadins,
În calea timpilor ce vin
O stea s-ar fi aprins;

Ai fi trăit în veci de veci
Şi rânduri de vieţi,
Cu ale tale braţe reci
Înmărmureai măreţ,

Un chip de-a pururi adorat
Cum nu mai au perechi
Acele zâne ce străbat
Din timpurile vechi.

Căci te iubeam cu ochi păgâni
Şi plini de suferinţi,
Ce mi-i lăsară din bătrâni
Părinţii din părinţi.

Azi nici măcar îmi pare rău
Că trec cu mult mai rar,
Că cu tristeţe capul tău
Se-ntoarce în zadar,

Căci azi le semeni tuturor
La umblet şi la port,
Şi te privesc nepăsător
C-un rece ochi de mort.

Tu trebuia să te cuprinzi
De acel farmec sfânt
Şi noaptea candelă s-aprinzi
Iubirii pe pământ."

My planet

So here I stand, among those which do not move. If you do not move, you can never notice the chains. But why would anyone move, why would anyone even raise their heads when the ground is such a lively show?

Amidst all of those grey ghosts, I feel...pity and repugnance at the same time. The thick brown dust in the air, along with the terrible wind rule all on this planet. We are all slaves of the chaos and obey any order it gives, be it real or just imagined by our paranoic minds. By their paranoic minds. I refuse to give in, I refuse to lie down whenever the wind starts blowing, like everyone else does.

They kept telling me that I could only survive the storm by bowing down. Now they have ceased to do that. They have all went away. There is not a single soul in sight, not a single heart whose beat to warm my ear.

I feel ...alone.

Trecut

Trecut-au vremurile când
Eu îţi scriam de la fereşti
Vorbind despre amor, sperând
Că şi tu ai să mă iubeşti.

Trecut-a timpul preţuit
Când tu pe mine mă-ndrăgeai
Şi-mi dovedeai mereu, zâmbind,
Că mă găseam, nebun, în Rai.

Trecut-a, brusc, iubirea 'ceea
Ce ne lega, copii fiind,
Trăit-am dulce epopeea
Amorului neprihănit.

Venit-a noaptea cea de fier
Al morţii cea de gheată fruct
Tu-l îndrageşti acum pe el
Eu, mort, tânjesc după trecut.

Day and night

I was just a child.

I had seen few springs come and go, a dozen and a few more, yet none had been so beautiful.

I was in love.

She was the most beautiful girl for me. She was special. I loved her.

We became so attached, that we would send each other messages with just "I love you." written. There was no need of more words. Just love.

And then I had this dream... I was in a huge room and I saw her. She was getting married with another. And then my image was getting farther and farther away from them... and she seemed so happy to be with him...the room was gigantic, and dark, and cold... and my heart was frozen... then I suddenly woke up... I was crying...

A couple of months later, she told me that she was going to leave. I had hoped I'd never see her crying.

That day, the sun cried.

A lot of time after that, she told me that she was with another. I had hoped I'd never hear myself lying.

That night, the moon died.

I had seen only a few winters come and go by then, but none had been so cold...

Selfless tears?

I've read a post on a blog in which the author states that she doesn't think a person's death is really something sad.

She considers that someone who cries over somebody else's death is actually selfish, and that his mourning isn't caused by the fact that the deceased won't be able to enjoy life anymore, but actually by the fact that he, the mourner, won't be able to enjoy life with the dead person.

I disagree.

My first question is: "Doesn't that make all of us selfish?". Doesn't that mean that each and every one of us (who surely has or will eventually cry for someone dear who passed away) is selfish? Well, wouldn't that imply that selfishness is a universal condition, albeit only in a certain measure? Sad.

Say I'm reading a book. I don't think that the fact that I cry over the death of a fictional character, just because I've grown attached to it and am sad to see such an interesting (fictional) life end, is selfish.

The simple fact that people I haven't met in my entire life whose life suddenly (or not so suddenly) ends are able to impress me, or anybody for that matter, makes me think that not all grieving is selfish.

On the other hand, I believe the cause of people considering other people's death sad could be fear. The fact that a life can end so abruptly is, indeed, very scary. It makes you really realize that life is very damn fragile. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that makes us cry, the fact that we realize we could be next.

I'll give you another example: have you ever seen Avril Lavigne's video for her song "When you're gone"? Do you know the part, near the end, when the old man is all dressed up, with a glass of champagne in his hand and another one on his deceased wife's tombstone, and says: 'I miss you...'? If you haven't, you can do at the end of this post.
You can't tell me that it doesn't affect you, even if only a bit.

Well, how can you say that someone's death can't be a sad event after seeing that man, reduced to a small child inside, crying his eyes out over a person he probably loved his entire life? If you call that egoism, then egoism is either a good thing, or it's just universal, or both.

(by the way, Youtube doesn't allow me to embed the video from their site, so...)

The angel

[note: this is part II. Part I is here.]

One week had passed.

The child was still wandering around in that sea of golden sand, desperately looking for someone else than the memory of his mother. Her blue eyes haunted him even in his sleep, her last words still echoing in his mind. "Don't follow." she said. But what did she mean?

He hadn't had a drink for almost two days.

The scorching sun had drank all the water off the face of the earth, and needed more.

It was too much. He decided this was to be his final night. There was nothing left for him, but sand and more sand. And, as he had found out himself earlier that day, sand didn't turn to water, even under threat.

Talking to sand wasn't the strange thing, it was the fact that the sand had started talking back.

He closed his eyes. Like every night since the attack, his mother's eyes were all he could see. But that night was different. That night he saw her.

He opened his eyes, and there was light everywhere. White, pure, blinding light.

A blonde girl with long hair, wearing a dress made of snow, was all he could see. He couldn't look away from her, her blue eyes piercing him.

She smiled.

Why did she smile? Why wouldn't she just leave him to be, alone in the burning desert?

He violently woke up. The desert was still there. There was no girl, just sand...

P.S. I've started this story here.

Do You Know Where You're Going? - Part IV

Defining your core values

You have just listed the top three most important things in your life. Rewrite your top three values in order on the blanks below. Then for each principle, write a definition, a statement of what it means to you to be successful in that area. At the end of your life, how will you know if you've succeeded? If you put "family," what does a good family man or woman look like to you? If you put "spirituality," how will you know you've succeeded at being a spiritual person?

1. Value: ________________________________
"Success to me means ... " ________________________________________

2. Value: _________________________________________
"Success to me means ... " ________________________________________

3. Value: ________________________________________
"Success to me means ... " ________________________________________

Sit in front of a computer with a blank word processing page and type the three paragraphs together, merging them into one statement. It could be several sentences or several paragraphs. You've just created a personal mission statement for your life. Think of it as your constitution. It will become your benchmark, your standard of excellence. Then you can get your behavior in line with your mission. You will measure yourself against it.

Continuously ask yourself if an activity is moving toward your mission in life. This statement will whack you upside the head if not. For example, if you say taking care of your health is important to you, then you eat eight slices of pizza and watch 15 hours of television, it is very apparent you're not supporting yourself with your actions.

When you're making changes in your life and setting goals, refer to this statement of purpose. I promise this activity will have an impact on your productivity. It's been said that "true character is the ability to carry out a goal long after the mood in which it was created has passed." That's when the real challenge begins.

(The pictures in the last 4 postings do not have anything to do with the text, other than that which you understand of them to have - LoL :-) )

Do You Know Where You're Going? - Part III

Determining your core values

1. Holding that visualization in your mind, read through the list of values below. They might be important to you; they might not be. Go though the list, and this first time, circle any and all of the values that you'd cross the bridge for. Add any to the bottom that aren't listed here that are important to you.

  • Peace
  • Integrity
  • Power
  • Wealth
  • Joy
  • Influence
  • Happiness
  • Love
  • Justice
  • Success
  • Recognition
  • Spirituality
  • Friendship
  • Family
  • Career
  • Fame
  • Truth
  • Status
  • Authenticity
  • Wisdom
  • Acceptance
  • Health
  • ____________
  • ____________
  • ____________

2. Go back through the items you've circled and narrow it down to only six. Which items are more important to you than the others? Place a star next to your top six values.

3. Picture this: You've got those six items lined up with you on the side of the chasm. I have the ability to make you choose between them. You've got to throw three away. What things would go? If all you had left in your life were three values, what would they be? Cross out three of the six, so that your top three values are remaining.

4. Lastly, rank order your top three values. Which one would go first? Label that #3. Which one would go second? Label that #2. So if all you had in your life were one single thing, that would be remaining until the end. Label that #1.

Do You Know Where You're Going? - Part II

Discovering your true priorities

The main objective of a personal mission statement is to define what's important to you. Many people say "this is important" and "that is important," but how do you narrow it down to what's truly important in your life? I like to use the following visualization:

Scenario A
Picture a thick, banded-steel cable about 2 feet in circumference and 100 feet long, stretched out across the floor. You are standing at one end, and I'm on the other. I call out to you, "I'll give you $100 if you can step onto the cable and walk across it like a balance beam over to me without falling off onto the floor." Would you try it? Sure! Most people would. Why? Basically, it involves a fairly low risk with a relatively high payoff for the effort required. It could be fun and a little challenging.

Scenario B
Now we're going to suspend the cable just a "bit." In fact, have you ever been to the Royal Gorge Bridge in Canon City, Colorado? It's the highest suspension bridge in the world, with a cable like ours spanning a chasm, with a little tram that travels across the cable. Except you don't get to ride the tram. You are standing on one end of the chasm, and I'm on the other side of the chasm, with the cable suspended between us.

I yell out, "HEY! (Echo: "hey ... hey ... hey ...") If you can cross the cable like a balance beam without falling off into the river below, I'll give you $100!"

There is no way anyone in his or her right mind would attempt that. The risk is too high for the reward involved. So let's up the ante. Would you cross it for $250,000? No? How about a million dollars? How much would I have to offer you? What if I let you crawl across on your belly? The reward might never be high enough to risk your life.

Scenario C
Let's add a little wind (maybe, oh, a slight 40 MPH breeze) and a tad of rain to make the cable a bit slick. I'm on one side of the chasm, and you're on the other. In my arms, I hold your child hostage. I yell, "If you don't cross the chasm in two minutes, I'm throwing your child in the river."

Would you come now? Of course you would! Despite the incredibly high risk to your own life, that child is so priceless to you that you'd risk your own life to save another.

Perhaps if you don't have children, it could be your parents, your significant other or your friend. Clearly, that person is a core value in your life. What other things exist like that in your life? What principles, values or character traits are most important to you, such that if I were to rip it out of your life and throw it into the chasm, you would be willing to cross the bridge to save it? What things are so integral to who you are that you cannot imagine existing without them?

Do You Know Where You're Going? - Part I

"Tom Peters said, "Effective visions prepare for the future but honor the past." Do you have a set course in your life, an established direction, outlined with purposeful thought? Or are you simply a boat floating on the water with a broken rudder, able to be pushed whichever way the wind blows, governed by the tides and external forces?

Productive people have given a great deal of thought and time to planning their courses of action and life goals. Their daily, weekly and monthly activities all roll up to a mission statement, life goals, long-term and short-term goals, and project plans. To be the guide of your own life, you have to get a hold of the rudder.

Much like a corporate mission statement, your personal mission statement defines who you are, what you're all about, and why you're here. Why do you need a personal mission statement?

  • It helps you make difficult decisions when faced with the myriad choices life presents to you.
  • It helps you realize how very little time you truly have to accomplish the important things in your life.
  • It helps you recognize when you're off course and steers you back in the right direction.

Life is precious, and time is short. The best engineer cannot create more time, and the best scientist cannot invent more time. We all have the exact same amount of time — 24 hours a day, 168 hours every week, 86,400 seconds every day. Once it's gone, you can't get it back. You cannot accumulate time or borrow tomorrow's time. Since it feels like we have plenty of time left, we take for granted our 86,400 seconds every day."

Do You Know Where You're Going? - Prologue

Who here (we're not actually here, but this is another story) hasn't asked himself at least on one occasion what he wants to do with his life, who or what he wants to become when he's older?

Ok, you can put your hands down now.

I think we all need to find out what values we treasure most, what values we want to respect in life, the values that we want to live by.
So here is an article written by the Revolution Health Group titled "Do you know where you're going?".

Interested? Read on, I'm posting it in parts, because of its length.

It never rains in the desert...

'Close you eyes!' she told him.

He closed his eyes and let his head fall on her shoulder. Rain had apparently left a big stain on the back side of her shirt. But it never rained in the desert...

'I love you!' she said. A tear slowly fell from the corner of her blue eyes and hit the ground, making a sound far louder then the gunshots in the background. A single tear was all it took to stop time.

'Don't follow.' he thought he heard from her. Any other sound had already been suppressed by the sound of that one innocent tear.

'I have no fear anymore! I love you, and I promise that I'd do anything...' he said.

'Don't follow.' is what she responded.

'Now is the time to prove it. If anything happens to you, I will come to take you back, and take you back I shall. Nothing can stop me, because I love. Everybody knows that love makes wonders...'

'Don't follow.' she kept whispering.

'You always tell me that if I love someone, all will be well. Love makes anything happen, doesn't it?'

'Don't follow.' she interrupted.

'If I love someone, he will not know any pain. My love will protect him from harm, like it protects you, won't it?'

'Don't follow.'

Her tear had made the ground suffer and the skies cry.

'I love you too' he finally managed to speak.

She said nothing.

'Mom?'

He opened his eyes at the very moment that she closed hers.

It started raining... but it never rained in the desert.

Singularity

For those of you who are interested in the deeper meaning of life, or maybe just interested in what the future will bring, I've got an awesome site.

The site is under the form of a FAQ, providing (- mostly) answers to some of the questions that may cross your mind at some time.

The theory of Singularity is especially interesting because it portraits a future that certainly intrigues me and makes me ponder what we should do in order to evolve, and what the real purpose of human life is.

Click here for the site I'm talking about!

Another interesting fact which I don't know if is mentioned in the site is Moore's Law.
Moore's Law is a theory in computer hardware according to which the number of transistors that can be inexpensively placed on an integrated circuit is doubled approximately every two years.
This observation was first made by Gordon E. Moore, Intel's co-founder and has been exact for the last fifty years, being expected to last at least another decade or more.

On your right is the graph that shows the confirmation of Moore's law, applied on Intel processors.

The law interestingly enough can be applied to many electronic equipment other than computers, giving an idea of the growth in usefulness that electronics are undergoing.
Read more about it here.

Browse the site and come back here if you want to comment or post your own theories.

Express yourself!

I've always thought one should express his personality any way he can.
I mean, why be who you are, an individual and all, if you're not showing it? How can you say you're different if you're not proving it? By the way, isn't that what blogs are for? I know that's why I created this blog, because I sought a way to express and to find out who I was. Now, you should find out who you are!
I'm not going to list all the ways you can express yourself, because tomorrow I've got a term paper, but writing and drawing are two of the most prominent ones.

Drawing...here's something you'll find as being fun if you're into drawing (or not) :
As far as writing is concerned, if you feel up to the task of expressing who you are by literary means, either by a work of fiction, an article on something you find interesting or any original composition, go ahead and try it out. Maybe you have literary talent... if you don't try and find out, how can you tell?

I guarantee that you will find it both relaxing and rewarding and, when you're done, you can send me an e-mail at cosminhards@yahoo.com with the composition. We can discuss it if that's what you'd like and I promise that, with your agreement (if it's not spam), I'll post it to the blog.

You know what, I'm calling this a campaign. A campaign on finding out who you really are, as an individual in today's society. You can send your thoughts and compositions to the email above, and I'm going to post them periodically, so we can find out who we are together!

"Express yourself!" - Let others see who you are and you won't feel sorry about it!

Someone likes you

I think that smiling is a very important action one must do as much as he can, everyday. For today, here's the thought that should make you smile : Someone likes you. I'll prove it not by talking to you about your family and friends who care about you and think about you in a pleasant way, but by showing you someone else who likes you. Enjoy!

Birthday of a nation

Today is the national day of Romania, the country I've been born in and lived in for the past (almost) 16 years of my life.

Happy birthday, Romania!

Let me tell you about 1917-1918. It was the period of Greater Romania (Romania Mare - picture 3). The first province to join Romania was Bessarabia (Basarabia), in March 1918, following the "October Revolution" of 1917, which brought about the collapse of the Tsardom of Russia. After Ukraine tried to annex the province of Bukovina, it requested help from the Kingdom of Romania, which sent an army to protect the Bukovinans. Using the right to self-determination, Bukovina joined the Kingdom on the 27'th October, 1918. In November a national gathering is convoked in Alba-Iulia and on the date of December 1'st 1918, 1200 delegations of the Romanians in Transylvania (yeah, Dracula, that's the place!), in the presence of a popular gathering of over 100000 people, decide the unification of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania, thus uniting all the historical provinces populated by Romanians, creating the largest Romanian country ever to exist in time of peace.

It was the second time that the unification of every territory occupied by Romanians was achieved, the first being Michael the Brave's (Mihai Viteazul - picture 2 - Mishu FTW! :)) ) conquest in 1600, ended one year later, after his death.

Romanians have always been good patriots and close brothers, but sometimes we forget that. The sad thing is that it takes an important or even critical event as a war or a cataclysm to make us remember that we are all members of the same community. Patriotism is mostly forgotten during peaceful times, people going as far as joking and making fun of their own compatriots when they talk of the spirit of this country, a spirit that has helped us keep our own national identity during the years that have passed from the conquest of Dacia by the Romans, in 106 A.D.

Even then, Dacia was an important province and it was said that the leader Burebista (82-44 B.C.), who managed to unite the Northern part of the Thracians (Romania's territory of today) under his rule, defeating the Romans and the Celts, along with other peoples, managed to bring together the greatest army from there to India, seeding fear among his enemies.

The Romanian countries fought in order to deny the Ottoman Empire in the Middle Ages access to Europe, refusing their advance countless times. Names like Mircea cel Batran ("Mircea the Elder"), Stefan cel Mare ("Stefan the Great") Vlad Tepes ("Vlad the Impaler" - yep, that's him) or Iancu de Hunedoara ("John Hunyadi") struck a great deal of fear in the turks. Romania acted as a guardian of Europe, as the "Gates of Christianity" who stayed firmly shut in front of the Ottomans.

Romania has been an important country during the last couple of centuries, too. Bucharest, it's capital, was even called "Little Paris" in the interbellic period. Although important territories were lost in the forties, first Bassarabia and Bukovina were lost to the Soviet Union after the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact, then a large part of Northern Transylvania to Hungary and the Cadrilater to Bulgaria, separating the Romanians politically once again, the spirit is still alive in the heart of every true Romanian, be him under the name of "Romanian", "Moldavian", "Ukranian" or any other such nationality, because we all have common ancestors, common roots.

One cannot forget his roots, or he will never fully understand who he really is.

I am a Romanian, and I'm proud to say it. Now, who are you?

Beauty and "the beast"

What is beauty?

It is said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
I completely agree with this quote, thinking of beauty as an abstract concept, a characteristic of either an object, a person, a place or an idea that induces a feeling of pleasure or meaning.

Where does beauty come from?

I believe that the beauty of something emerges from the meaning one gives to it. That is the reason why people's tastes are never alike, why two people with different life experiences can appreciate the same object differently.
An object bears a message. It is the symbol of something, a symbol deciphered by our minds with the help of past experiences and transformed into an idea, a thought, which represents the hidden core of every object. The form is just a shell, just like the wrapper of your favorite candy, the cover of your favorite book, the eyes of the one you love... beyond them lies the true object, the nature of which is never physical, but conceptual. It matters not whether "her" eyes are blue, green or black, what matters is that which lies behind them, the person inside, the soul that cares so much about you. The eyes are just doors, windows of the soul, ways in which the soul connects with the world.
To be beautiful, something must mean something special to the mind. Its core must be pleasurable for the mind, it must trigger a "happy response" from it.
Every aspect of an object is a potential "beauty factor", having the possibility of impressing the mind which understands it's message.
The same song can mean different things to different people, sometimes even inspiring opposite feelings. Why that song is beautiful to someone comes down to form and meaning. A song's form is the melody, the succession of notes that create the song's body. It can impress through the skillful use of an instrument (the violin and the piano always impress me) or a catchy sequence or part that appeals to the listener. Deeper than the form is the song's meaning, carried both by the atmosphere created and, if present, by the song's lyrics. Sometimes, a song will impress much more by its strong lyrical message, being capable to transmit some feeling or thought much more accurately than a melody can.

Other than the object itself, the context is a very important factor in the beauty of something. The context can either make, or break, or just complete the object's features by the "whole" it creates along with it. For example, if we take the same snow flake falling from the same sky in different conditions, let's say in state 1 it's snowing heavily and you can't observe a snow flake in itself, and in state 2 our snow flake is falling slowly, hanging in the air for a while before touching the ground in a painfully slow manner, then that one snow flake's beauty in our mind is different, quite different between the states.

What matter are the criteria by which one's mind judges the object as beautiful or not.

One would, not without difficulties at first, but ultimately one would be able to think of an object in the type of "the beast" as beautiful. Some traits, physical or mental, can be the ones that create a beautiful image for "the beast".
Take "the beast" from the famous story by the name of "Beauty and the beast". Even though he is ugly on the outside, he is a wonderful person, very hospitable and a very sensible and caring man. "Beauty" - the girl - eventually sees past his ugliness and recognizes the man within as stronger and more important. Beauty is found in "the beast"'s behavior and feelings towards others. "The beast" is a symbol for all things which, apparently, are "ugly", whatever meaning "ugly" can receive, but in their true nature they reveal themselves as beautiful.

It proves that beauty is far more complex that what the eye can see and that it takes time and attention to find the true nature, the true meaning of something.

Tag! I'm it!

Seems like I got it from Tvvity.

What do I want for Christmas this year?

What I'm thinking about right now are PS3 games like Haze, Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty 4 (actually, I'm getting this one myself sooner than Christmas, I think).

What else do I want? ....

A, yes, now I remember...well, that's not going to happen anymore, so why bother you with it? *sigh*

On another, more cheerful note, how many of you still believe in Santa? I know I do.
Yes, I do know that no kind-of-overweight older-than-your-average-grandpa, red-wearing, pipe-smoking or chimney-climbing man visits me every year, but I'm talking about the true Santa, the true nature of Christmas all around the world. I'm talking about the fact that the real Santa DOES exist. Santa is the spirit that fills all of us around Christmas, that joy of being with the ones you care about, the warmth you get on a snowy day from watching the one you love, the excitement and surprise that overwhelm most children, the beauty contained in that one snow flake that keeps gliding through the air before it gently settles on the ground, among it's infinite counterparts... you see, even the snow flakes spend Christmas with their loved ones.
All of these feelings and many more represent Santa, who is in fact as real as you and me, and who does come each Christmas, not only in our house but, most importantly, in our souls.
The fact that we (most of us - I do know that some, if not most, of my readers are 4-year-olds, that's why I'm trying to keep everything PG) know that no such old man is going to come doesn't diminish the feeling I get from thinking about Christmas.
As long as his presence is felt throughout the world, what would even be the purpose of him showing up?

And concerning my wishes for this holiday, I really don't believe I have any. The people I care most about are all around me, I'm healthy enough (I think so :) ) and so are they, so what could I wish for?
I know, how about wishing that everyone on this tiny planet would just join in on all the beautiful feelings nature has to offer, both outside, and inside.

I'm passing the tag on to whomever feels like writing about his/her Christmas wish/es. How about you, Denize, since you've written most of the comments on the blog?
Whomever it is that chooses to continue, please post a link here so we can all read about it.

We're still children... aren't we?

I believe every one of us still holds a part of his childhood self. We should all take a moment from our busy lives and play sometimes.

It doesn't matter the age we are, the place we're from, the lives we have. Everyone still has a part of themselves that is eager to burst out and play. No reasons, just fun.

Moments in which you forget all your worries, all you duties and debts. Now isn't that bliss? We should all try to never forget to relax, because the stress needs to get out somehow, and if you don't do it by playing, it may come out in a more undesirable form.

So my advice for today is : "Shut up and HAVE FUN!"
